Extended Ministries
We (David and Susie Meier) believe that by meeting the “felt needs” of others, this gives us an open door to share what Christ has done in our lives and how He blesses faith and obedience. Susie Meier has been a Credentialed Teacher at the Adult Education/Community College level since 1997. She agrees with Rick Warren, author of Purpose Driven Life, who says,
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Through the venue of Adult Education, Susie and David have found that offering practical education to those in need is a way to reach out to the local community and bring the love of the Lord to those who might never hear about Christ. We are available both locally and long distance to help you and your church family explore any of the following ministry opportunities and determine how the Lord would bless your ministry vision. If you or someone in your church has a burden to reach out to the community through any of the following ministry opportunities, we are available for consultation.
English as a Second Language(ESL) /Citizenship Ministry
Are there individuals in your community who don’t speak enough English to get a decent job? Are they new to America and have no American friends? Have they tried regular ESL classes (in the public school system) but left these classes because they needed individualized instruction? Would they like to get their citizenship so that they can assimilate into our culture?
Many Hispanic and Middle Eastern immigrants are moving into our neighborhoods. Often, they don’t have an inkling about Jesus or why we call Him our Savior and Lord. Meeting with these immigrants and refugees, once a week, gives us a chance to show them who Christ is and how His love is available through us. Taking a personal interest in their lives and their unique struggles, gives us the opportunity to reach out and love them as Christ would.
If this ministry opportunity interests you, Tahoe Christian Ministries (TCM) can help you get started. We have ESL and Citizenship curriculum. Some ESL materials utilize stories and characters from the Bible. Our Citizenship curriculum is Christ-centered and shows the hand of God in the building of our nation. We can teach you how to evaluate the ESL level of your students, determine appropriate curriculum, teach in a classroom setting or one-on-one, and develop additional resources such as job-specific vocabulary (VOC/ESL) to fast-track your student into a desired job. Helping an immigrant pass their citizenship test can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. Consultation is available on-line or in person.
GED Preparation
Do you know someone who didn’t finish high school and wishes now that they had? Did you try to encourage them to get their GED so they can get a better job? Or did you suggest that going to college was easier than high school, only to have them say that studying was too difficult and they couldn't “keep up.” Some individuals would welcome an opportunity to complete their GED if they had the focus and support of a mentor who walked them through their studies step-by-step. Most GED students say that they could probably pass the test except for their limited math and writing skills. Do you have any retired teachers in your congregation who would love to mentor a student and share Christ’s love in the process? GED classes at your church are an excellent way to develop relationships with those in need. Taking a personal interest in someone and encouraging them through the testing process, provides an open door to share what Christ is doing in your life. If this ministry opportunity is of interest to you, TCM is available for consultation either on-line or in person.
Singles Ministry
David and Susie were each single for an extended period of time before they married in 2005. They know first-hand that being single can be difficult. Many Singles say that they suffer from loneliness and lack of purpose. During her single years, Susie was active in her local church’s Singles group of 300 members. She learned that single adults want more than just social events. They want a chance to worship and share the Lord with other singles. She was also active in Christian Singles Network (CSN), an organization with 8000 singles on its mailing list. She assisted with CSN’s numerous social events and served as a guest speaker, on occasion.
When David and Susie married, they both found enjoyment in the Word of God and Prayer every morning. After a few months, they began to feel lead by God to explore ministry opportunities in their community. They each had a heart for Singles. After much prayer, they opened their home for a Singles Bible Study in 2005. Their belief is that Singles hold a special place in God’s kingdom. The Apostle Paul speaks of the gift of Singleness and the greater ability to serve God’s kingdom as unencumbered by family responsibilities. Too often Singles feel a “lack” in their lives due to societal pressure and/or an unclear purpose for their life in Christ. Many suffer from divorce and carry a self –imposed sense of inadequacy or low self-worth. David and Susie have found that a Bible Study, in a home setting, can provide a safe environment where singles are drawn closer to Christ and experience His unconditional love. Singles from the local and outlying Christian communities can attend these meetings. Singles can be encouraged to open their Bibles, ask questions and seek the Lord’s will for their lives.
If you feel the calling on your life to reach out to Singles, both in your church or in the surrounding community, David and Susie Meier would love to consult with you about how to start a Christ-honoring Singles Group. They have learned through experience that much prayer and waiting on the Lord is critical. Singles respond favorably when others genuinely care. Singles want to be with others who are single and understand what Singleness is all about. But most of all, Singles want to learn how to seek God’s will and then share what God is doing in their lives. David and Susie invite you to contact them for consultation on-line or in person.
